BIGBANG’s 20th-anniversary comeback has landed with a bang, literally. On August 19 at 6 p.m. KST, G-Dragon, Taeyang, and Daesung released “BiiiG,” their first new song in more than four years, and the trio immediately took over South Korea’s major real-time music charts. According to YG Entertainment, the single reached No. 1 on Melon, Genie, Bugs, and VIBE shortly after release and was still holding the top position as of 8 a.m. KST on August 20. The comeback arrives exactly 20 years after BIGBANG’s debut, making the chart performance an especially striking anniversary statement.
“BiiiG” is more than a nostalgia release. The track introduces BIGBANG’s current three-member lineup following the departures of former members T.O.P and Seungri, while maintaining the musical identity that made the group one of K-pop’s most influential acts. The song is described as a high-energy hip-hop track built around a grand beat and addictive hook, with G-Dragon participating in both composition and lyric writing. His sharp rap delivery is paired with Taeyang’s smooth vocals and Daesung’s powerful voice, creating the combination that longtime VIPs have been waiting years to hear again.
The numbers were particularly impressive on Melon, South Korea’s most important domestic streaming platform. “BiiiG” recorded the highest number of unique listeners during its first hour among songs released in 2026, according to YG. It also entered the platform’s TOP100 chart at No. 1 within an hour. The song subsequently recorded what is known as a “roof hit” nine times, indicating exceptionally high real-time usage on the chart.
For BIGBANG, this isn’t unfamiliar territory. The group has repeatedly demonstrated an unusual ability to command the Korean public’s attention even after long periods away. Their 2022 single “Still Life” became a major chart success despite arriving after a lengthy hiatus and without conventional music-show promotions. “BiiiG” now suggests that the group’s public appeal has survived another four-year absence.
That longevity becomes even more remarkable when BIGBANG’s history is considered. After debuting in 2006, the group became one of the defining acts of the second generation of K-pop. Songs including “Lies,” “Haru Haru,” “Fantastic Baby,” “Bad Boy,” “LOSER,” and “BANG BANG BANG” helped establish their reputation for constantly reinventing themselves. Their music moved between hip-hop, electronic music, R&B and pop while retaining a distinctive BIGBANG identity.
The new single’s accompanying music video leans into that history without simply recreating the past. The video features surreal imagery including a truck travelling through space, BIGBANG’s signature light stick, and a set inspired by “Sunset Glow,” the title track from their second full album. Vibrant colors and references to the group’s visual history create an anniversary celebration that feels deliberately connected to their past while pointing toward a new era. The video also quickly climbed to No. 1 on YouTube’s worldwide trending and rising music charts.
And BIGBANG isn’t stopping with the single. The release serves as the opening salvo for their massive “BIGBANG 2026-2027 WORLD TOUR [XX : COSMOS]”, which begins in Goyang on August 21. The tour is scheduled to span 33 shows across 19 cities, including stops across Asia, North America, Europe and Oceania.
For VIPs, then, “BiiiG” is doing exactly what an anniversary comeback should: acknowledging two decades of history while refusing to behave like a museum piece. BIGBANG is celebrating the past, but the charts suggest the public is still very interested in what comes next.
