Episode 2 – “Course No. 2: Sous Vide Cuisine”

Spoiler Alert

Summary:

Ji-young and her new acquaintance Seo Gil‑geum try to adapt to their surroundings, but trouble soon finds them. While seated by a river, they’re captured by the chaehong guards (women abducted for palace use) and taken to Governor Hong’s residence.
Ji-young begins to accept she has been transported in time. She is forced into cooking for the governor’s event under harsh conditions and makes a deal: if she succeeds, she and the women will be spared. Meanwhile, King Yi Heon arrives to taste her dish and is surprised by the modern seasoning technique.
At the end, the king discards her bag (which contains the mysterious cookbook she used for time-slip) over a cliff, asserting control and reminding Ji-young her freedom is gone. Judiciary and palace politics deepen: the king’s motive for revenge (linked to his mother’s death) becomes clearer.

Key Moments:

  • Ji-young realises this is not a joke or film set — she’s in another era.
  • The dish she cooks uses a sauce/powder that mimics MSG from the future — the king notices.
  • King Yi Heon’s cold move: tossing her bag, showing the stakes are high and personal.
  • Introductions of palace side-characters who will influence her survival and cooking fate.

What it means for the story:
The stakes escalate. Food remains central, but now cooking = survival + political leverage. Ji-young’s modern knowledge gives her an edge, but the environment is hostile. The king’s motives become more layered. The time-slip consequences (her bag, the mysterious cookbook) get tied into her fate in the palace.
