Episode 3 – “Course No. 3: Haute Cuisine & Intrigues”
Spoiler Alert
Summary:
The episode opens with King Yi Heon recovering from a wound, his court discussing whether poison or other plots were involved. Ji-young finds herself relocated to a “special residence”—which turns out to be a jail-like confinement within the palace walls.
She is officially appointed as the chief royal cook, but this role comes with fatal pressure: if her food fails the king’s taste, her life is at risk. Rival cooks and senior kitchen staff begin to conspire against her; chief among them is Kang Mok‑ju, the king’s consort, who views Ji-young as a threat and starts plotting.
The palace intrigue expands: the dowager queen questions Yi Heon’s erratic behaviour; Ji-young realises that her cooking is not just dishes but danger, politics, and identity. The episode ends with her surrounded by enemies in the kitchen and the court — she must cook not only to survive but to prove her place.
Key Moments:
What it means for the story:
This episode shifts from “how did I get here?” to “how will I survive here?” The kitchen becomes the centre of power, rivalries bloom. The time-slip element is still present, but the focus tightens on palace intrigue and cooking as symbolic power. The romance is still simmering beneath the surface, but politics now take the front seat.
