After more than five years, i-dle leader Soyeon has officially returned as a solo artist with her first full-length album, What A Wonderful Life.
The album was released at 6 p.m. KST on September 7, marking Soyeon’s first solo release since her 2021 mini album Windy. The comeback represents a major personal milestone for an artist who has already played one of the most influential creative roles within her group.
Soyeon is not simply i-dle’s leader and rapper. She is widely recognized as one of the group’s central songwriters, composers and producers, helping shape the group’s musical direction from its earliest years.
That creative identity carries directly into What A Wonderful Life. Soyeon participated in the writing and composition of every track, using the album to explore a much broader range of sounds than listeners might expect.
The project moves across genres including rock, hyperpop, disco and band-oriented music. Instead of presenting one tightly defined musical persona, the album is designed to show several sides of Soyeon as both an artist and producer.
The title track, “I’m gonna TOESA (Narr. KIAN84),” takes a playful approach to the idea of quitting one’s job. The concept is particularly interesting because Soyeon has often written about confidence, ambition and self-determination in her work with i-dle. Here, she turns the everyday fantasy of walking away from work into the centrepiece of a solo project.
Her return is also significant because of the length of the gap.
Windy arrived in July 2021, meaning fans have waited approximately five years and two months for another major solo album. During that time, i-dle themselves underwent significant growth, with releases such as “TOMBOY,” “Nxde,” “Queencard” and “Super Lady” strengthening the group’s reputation for self-directed concepts.
Soyeon’s solo return therefore arrives with considerably more creative experience than she had when Windy was released.
The new album is effectively a snapshot of what she has learned since then.
It also gives fans a chance to hear Soyeon without having to fit her ideas into a five-member group structure.
With promotions now underway, attention will turn to the album’s live stages, music-show appearances and how the individual tracks perform.
After five years away, Soyeon has plenty to say.
