JTBC’s weekend drama “Reborn Rookie” is quickly becoming one of Korea’s biggest television success stories of 2026. After premiering with a modest 3.7 percent rating, the series has surged to a peak of 10.7 percent in the Seoul metropolitan area within just six episodes, making it the top program in its time slot and one of the most talked-about dramas currently airing.

The series has attracted attention not only for its impressive ratings growth but also for its unique premise. Created by renowned drama creator Kim Soon Ok and based on a web novel by San Kyung, the author behind the source material for Reborn Rich, “Reborn Rookie” blends corporate intrigue, revenge, and reincarnation into a single story.

The drama follows Kang Yong Ho, a legendary 72-year-old business tycoon and chairman of the powerful Choi Sung Group. Following an accident, he unexpectedly finds himself living a second life inside the body of a much younger man named Hwang Jun Hyun.

Hwang, played by Lee Jun Young, was once a rising soccer star and former K League 2 MVP with dreams of playing overseas. However, his future is destroyed after a hit-and-run incident connected to the Choi Sung family. Through an unexpected twist of fate, Kang Yong Ho’s soul ends up inhabiting Hwang’s body, setting the stage for a story filled with corporate power struggles, second chances, and hidden agendas.

A major reason behind the drama’s growing popularity has been Lee Jun Young’s performance. The actor faces the challenging task of portraying both a young athlete and an elderly chairman simultaneously. Viewers have praised his ability to distinguish between the two personalities through subtle changes in speech, mannerisms, and emotional expression.

One scene in particular generated significant discussion online when Hwang, speaking with Chairman Kang’s mindset, expressed concern for his wife. Many viewers highlighted the emotional contrast between the character’s youthful appearance and the wisdom of a man in his seventies.

The series has also gained momentum through increasingly high-stakes storylines. Episode six featured a tense battle over an overseas lithium mining project, where Hwang Jun Hyun, Kang Bang Geul, and Park Bong Gi worked together to expose falsified reserve data and prevent a rival company from securing a lucrative deal.

As ratings continue climbing week after week, “Reborn Rookie” is rapidly transforming from an underdog newcomer into one of the year’s most unexpected K-drama successes. With viewers praising both its storyline and performances, the drama appears poised to remain one of the biggest television talking points in the weeks ahead.
