CNBLUE’s Jung Yong Hwa has shared new details about his character in upcoming romance drama “Oh! My Guard,” revealing that the seemingly perfect actor he plays has two unexpected flaws: he refuses to film kissing scenes and is tone-deaf. The drama is scheduled to premiere on October 24 at 10:50 p.m. KST.
Jung Yong Hwa plays Uhm Tae Bong, an A-list actor celebrated for his looks, acting ability and star power. He has earned a reputation as a romance expert thanks to his work in romantic dramas, yet he refuses to film kissing scenes. His other weakness is musical: despite being played by the vocalist of a real-life band, Tae Bong cannot sing in tune.
The contrast is central to the character’s appeal. Tae Bong has built a public image around being the ideal romantic lead, but his strict professional rule and hidden shortcomings complicate that carefully constructed persona. The series explores what happens when a man who appears to have everything encounters circumstances he cannot control.
His life changes after meeting Oh Hae Ra, played by Hong Seung Hee. Following an accident, Hae Ra believes she is Cha Hong Doo, the heroine of Tae Bong’s drama, “The Prince’s Bodyguard.” Her conviction disrupts the actor’s life and sets up an unpredictable romance between a celebrity and a woman whose understanding of reality has taken an unusual turn.
Jung Yong Hwa said he was attracted to the premise because it allowed him to explore the idea of being close to an artist one admires and even personally protecting that person. He also found himself curious about what would happen next as he read the script.
To portray Tae Bong, the actor focused on the character’s emotional reactions rather than relying on physical intimacy to communicate romance. He paid attention to eye contact, vocal tone and subtle shifts in expression. That approach is particularly relevant for a character whose refusal to film kissing scenes becomes a defining feature of his public image.
Jung Yong Hwa also described the challenge of deliberately singing off-key. One memorable scene involves Tae Bong attempting IU’s “Good Day,” a performance that required the trained singer to do the opposite of what comes naturally to him.
“Oh! My Guard” premieres October 24 at 10:50 p.m. KST. The upcoming romantic comedy promises celebrity-life satire, mistaken identity and a lead character whose biggest weaknesses may be the very things that make him interesting.
