Kim Ji Won’s “Doctor X” Sets October Premiere With A Genius Surgeon At War With A Corrupt Hospital

Kim Ji Won is heading into the medical-drama world with “Doctor X,” and SBS has now confirmed that the highly anticipated series will premiere on October 9.

On August 31, SBS released photographs from the drama’s script reading, introducing the ensemble cast and offering a first look at the chemistry behind the upcoming medical noir.

Based on the popular Japanese series of the same name, “Doctor X” follows Gye Soo Jung, played by Kim Ji Won, a brilliant surgeon whose confidence comes from one thing above everything else: her ability to operate.

Rather than climbing the traditional hospital hierarchy, Gye Soo Jung is dispatched through a doctor-for-hire agency. She enters Guseo University Hospital, an institution described as deeply affected by corruption, and begins disrupting its existing power structure through her exceptional surgical skills.

Kim Ji Won is joined by a particularly strong supporting cast.

Lee Jung Eun plays Jang Hee Sook, the head of the doctor-for-hire agency. Her character appears money-driven and calculating but is expected to provide much of the drama’s lighter energy.

Son Hyun Joo takes on the role of Bu Seung Kwon, director of the Guseo University Hospital branch, bringing a powerful opposing presence to the hospital hierarchy.

Meanwhile, Kim Woo Seok plays Park Tae Kyung, a wealthy-background intern whose relationship with Gye Soo Jung develops into an unusual mentor-and-student dynamic.

The cast also includes Lee Jin Hee, Kim Young Min, Lee Sung Wook, Kwon Seung Woo, Heo Jun Seok, Choi Deok Moon, Kim Jung Young, Kim Young Ah and Choi Kwang Il.

For Kim Ji Won, the project follows the success of dramas including Fight for My Way, My Liberation Notes and Queen of Tears. Her ability to move between romance, comedy and emotionally intense character work makes the sharp-edged Gye Soo Jung an intriguing next role.

The Japanese original’s reputation also gives the Korean adaptation a significant challenge: audiences will inevitably compare the new version with its source material.

What fans can expect next: “Doctor X” premieres October 9, with further posters and promotional materials expected before the first episode.
