Netflix has assembled a striking cast for its upcoming mystery thriller “Outback,” confirming Ryu Jun Yeol, Jung Ho Yeon, Hong Kyung, Won Ji An and Justin Min as the drama’s principal cast.

Netflix announced the lineup on September 11, revealing that the series will follow a Korean man who travels to Australia after learning about his older sister’s sudden death. What begins as a journey to understand her final days gradually develops into a much darker investigation.

The series is based on the webtoon “G’Day” and follows Shi On, played by Hong Kyung.

After arriving in Australia, Shi On begins tracing the clues his sister left behind. The more he investigates, however, the less convincing the circumstances surrounding her death become. His search eventually leads him toward people and events he was never supposed to uncover.

Ryu Jun Yeol plays Min Hyuk, a mysterious figure positioned at the centre of the case. His involvement is expected to create much of the tension surrounding Shi On’s investigation.

Jung Ho Yeon takes on the role of Smiley, an unpredictable Australian-based content creator and streamer. The role gives the Squid Game star another opportunity to expand her acting portfolio following her breakthrough as Kang Sae Byeok.

Won Ji An plays Shi Young, Shi On’s older sister whose death sets the entire story in motion, while Justin Min portrays Scott, a Korean-heritage police officer.

Behind the camera, the project has another major connection for thriller fans.

Han Jun Hee, the director behind Netflix’s D.P., will serve as executive producer. He also created the Weak Hero franchise. Jeon Doo Kwan, who worked as an assistant director on D.P. 2, will direct the series.

Han Jun Hee and Weak Hero Class 2 writer Park Hyun Woo are collaborating on the screenplay.

The combination of an international setting, a mysterious death and a cast that includes several highly regarded young Korean actors makes “Outback” particularly intriguing.

Netflix has not yet announced the release date.

What fans can expect next: Netflix is expected to reveal additional production details, promotional material and the eventual premiere date at a later stage.
