Suzy’s upcoming fantasy romance “Men of the Harem“ has found itself at the center of an unexpected online debate, with some Korean netizens criticizing the drama’s male cast over their appearance and claiming the lineup does not match the visual expectations associated with the highly anticipated series. The discussion surfaced on August 21 through Korean online community theqoo and was subsequently reported by Koreaboo. The controversy comes as the drama is already under intense scrutiny following the departure of Lee Soo Hyuk, who had reportedly been involved in filming before stepping away from the project.
The criticism centers on a recently circulated collage featuring several of the drama’s male actors, including Shin Seung Ho, Dex, Kim Dan, and Yoo Jung Hoo, alongside Lee Jong Won, who is reportedly reviewing the role previously associated with Lee Soo Hyuk. Rather than focusing on the actors’ performances or the characters they will portray, commenters on theqoo largely debated whether the lineup possesses the kind of striking visuals they expected from a drama built around a female protagonist surrounded by multiple male characters.
Some of the comments were particularly blunt. Several users described the male casting as weak, while others questioned whether the production could have found actors who appeared more suited to the story’s fantasy setting. One commenter suggested that there was no particularly handsome actor among the lineup, while another simply dismissed the visual appeal of the cast. At the same time, the reaction was not universally negative. Some users pushed back against the criticism, with one noting that the cast was not necessarily unattractive and another suggesting that Suzy’s involvement remained enough of a draw regardless of the male lineup.
The discussion is particularly interesting because Men of the Harem comes from an already enormously popular source material. The drama is based on Alessia Aurelia’s web novel and webtoon, which follows Latil, an empress who takes multiple men into her harem as she navigates palace politics, romance, betrayal, and questions surrounding power. Suzy is set to play the central character, making the project another major drama in the actress’s increasingly diverse résumé.
For Suzy, the series represents another high-profile television role following projects such as While You Were Sleeping, Vagabond, Start-Up, Anna, and Doona!. Her involvement has been one of the major reasons the adaptation attracted attention even before filming began.
However, the production has already experienced some turbulence. Lee Soo Hyuk’s reported departure from the project became an earlier talking point, with Koreaboo noting that the actor stepped away while filming was underway. His exit subsequently increased attention on the remaining male cast and the question of who would ultimately fill the role. Lee Jong Won is reportedly considering replacing him.
It is worth remembering that online reactions to casting photographs do not necessarily predict a drama’s eventual reception. Character styling, costumes, cinematography, acting chemistry, and the performances themselves can completely change how actors are perceived once a series actually premieres. In particular, fantasy adaptations often depend heavily on production design to establish the visual world promised by the original source.
For now, Men of the Harem remains one of the dramas attracting considerable curiosity, but the latest discussion shows that expectations surrounding its casting are already high. As production continues, audiences will likely get a clearer picture once official character posters, stills, and trailers are released.
And that may ultimately settle the debate better than a collage on social media ever could.
