Netflix has released new promotional material for “The Scandal,” giving viewers a much clearer look at the dangerous romantic game at the centre of the upcoming historical drama.
Starring Son Ye Jin, Ji Chang Wook and Nana, the series is scheduled to premiere worldwide on September 18.
“The Scandal” is based on the 2003 Korean film Untold Scandal, which itself drew inspiration from the classic French novel Les Liaisons dangereuses. The new series relocates the story into the world of Joseon, where social rules, gender expectations and reputation make romantic manipulation especially dangerous.
Son Ye Jin plays Lady Cho, a woman whose intelligence and talents extend far beyond the restrictions placed on women of her social position.
Ji Chang Wook plays Cho Won, described as the greatest playboy in Joseon.
Nana portrays Hui Yeon, a young widow who becomes trapped inside the escalating game between the other two characters.
The newly released teaser begins with a letter from Lady Cho to Cho Won. She proposes a provocative challenge: Cho Won should seduce So Ok, a woman destined to become a concubine within the family, and make her pregnant.
Instead of accepting the challenge quietly, Cho Won creates his own wager. He decides to pursue Hui Yeon, a young widow who initially rejects his advances.
What begins as a game gradually becomes more dangerous as genuine emotions enter the equation.
The new poster emphasizes the three-way dynamic. Lady Cho appears confident and controlled, Cho Won looks openly desirous, while Hui Yeon conceals her emotions beneath a traditional sseugaechima, a veil-like outer garment.
The imagery deliberately emphasizes secrecy and temptation, suggesting that the consequences of the wager will extend far beyond flirtation.
For Son Ye Jin, “The Scandal” represents a return to a particularly provocative historical-romance style following major successes including Crash Landing on You and Thirty-Nine. Ji Chang Wook, meanwhile, has built a reputation for action and romance across projects such as Healer, The K2 and If You Wish Upon Me.
Nana adds another layer after establishing herself through both music and acting.
The production is clearly positioning the three leads at the centre of a psychological romance where nobody can safely assume that the person they desire is telling the truth.
What fans can expect next: “The Scandal” premieres on Netflix on September 18, with the newly released teaser setting the stage for a very complicated love triangle.
